So this week (or perhaps today), i decided to go full curated mode and dive into our team’s musical taste using Lastfm and find interesting insight about it
Mbak @Nabila she just recently used the Last.fm, and i thought she was the type who listens to music 24/7, like, shower playlist, working playlist, meeting playlist and so on. But turns out, i was wrong. Her scrobbles are kinda modest, and when i saw at her recently played artists, my first reaction was like “Whoa… that’s niche pick”, like, hidden-gem-in-the-indie-corner-of-youtube-playlist-that-you-never-heard-of. But to be fair, i was kinda vibing with her picks, unexpectedly refreshing

And then, the power duo of @Bagas SP and mbak @tia. These two? definitely scrobble monsters who listens repetitively almost 24/7. They’ve only been using Last.fm for like 2 years, and yet their stats look like been using around ages. Especially mbak Tia, her music taste is so diverse it’s like scrolling through a bottom sea of genre. Compatibility wise, Bagas and i are practically listen towards the same artists (maybe we both had our same emotional phase and grow in same generation, who knows). While mbak Tia, it’s more of a mixed bag: some of her favorite artists i know, others i was like, “Is this a millenial playlist? Since the songs deeply resembles with 90s”

And the last one, mas @Yahya A …

To be honest, when i opened his profile, my face immediately did that confused expression. “WHAT are these tracks bruh??”, his music taste is like a randomizer wheel, super eclectic, genre fluid, and full of artists i’ve never heard of. Turns out, he’s been scrobbling since 2008, and no wonder it feels like his library super duper ultra diverse, it’s less of a playlist and more of a musical pilgrimage (perhaps, the generational gap is real? i don’t know).
Some of conclusion that i’ve gather: musical taste is a reflection of our identity, how we process emotions, how we relate to the world, and sometimes even how we grow up. High compatibility doesn’t always mean deeper connection and low compatibility doesn’t mean disconnection. But surely it opens up interesting conversations about who we are, what we’ve been through. Personally, if i was trying to map my musical among others, perhaps i could say something my musical taste were
- grounded and shared same culture with @Bagas SP
- open to overlap, but diverse enough to stay with mbak @tia
- curiosity about contrast with mbak @Nabila
- and last, being humbled by the unknown with mas @Yahya A
I think, this kind of insight which i found is quite interesting. Whether it’s for building empathy, understanding differences, or just making a shared playlist that doesn’t start a chaos in the office HAHA
